  • Not my usual content! Hope you all enjoy this temporary change of pace. ADDENDUM: at over 4500 viewers at points during the stream it was quite a lively chat and while most chatters were extremely nice and helpful, on more than a few occasions while editing I saw messages that absolutely do not reflect my own viewpoints on what was discussed. In particular, I felt Chrissy raised some excellent issues during her own video and am a little disgusted by some viewers questioning her authenticity or asserting it wasn't 'appropriate' for her to bring up. If I do any content like this again I'll probably just hide chat to be safe, but I felt that was important to underline here. Thanks again for watching! • Hey so, if I was one of those people, I’m sorry. I felt it was extremely unreasonable for a new creator to be expected to cover the very fraught history of fried chicken on her first video, which puts so much stress and makes her do so much more legwork about the history and cultural context of the food (especially compare to Chris’s meatballs). While the editors can lean back and snap their fingers. One of the other complaints from OG BA creators was that brown creators where supposed to represent the food “of their culture,” even if they wanted to do different types of cuisine, and the white creators had free reign to do whatever they wanted. This was a common complaint among the staff, and the fact that a black woman is expected to “stick to her lane,” even if she was furthering the conversation really well, was such ... such a bad move in the opposite direction of what they complained about. It’s pure tokenism. Of course I understand that such a knee jerk reaction doesn’t come across well in a live chat, but it was really abhorrent to me. Chrissy knocked it out of the park, handled the topic responsibility, but she should have NEVER been put in that situation.

  • I’m a cishet white woman, and I’ll be honest, if they had ACTUALLY put out a ton of videos about food I’d never heard of or experienced before, I still would have clicked just as fast to watch their latest video. I would have been excited by new faces and/or new cuisines to discover amidst their other content. That’s the kind of stuff I love watching, and I would have been excited to see BATK staff explore that in a genuine way. There’s a DRASTIC under-representation of non-Western cuisines (except for maybe certain Asian cuisines) in the western world as a whole, especially on social media. Not only did they treat their BIPOC staff horribly, but they lost out on a huge opportunity to bring culinary diversity to millions of people who may not have otherwise sought it out.

  • There's also a clear racist pattern in the likes and views of ALL BA's videos. Take a look at their channel and see how the content created by POC is received by the subscribers. You're not going to change the exploitive nature of corporations, but you certainly can influence the viewers' mentality towards their own racist behaviors.

  • I would love to see another video like this related to Food52's interactions with Sohla, Rick, and Hawa, as well as Sohla's show on Babbish's channel, and Priya's segments on NYT Cooking. Did they capture the BATK look and feel? Or is there still a dead body in the room?

  • I love how BA had policies and a way of mistreating their employees of color, and now they hire new people of color and the public wants to hear an apology or an explanation for the systemic racism of the company. How is that fair? The people of color in this video had absolutely nothing to do with BA's scandal. So don't watch ba's new videos with people of color and expect those people of color to say things to make you feel comfortable watching ba videos again. And it's a mistake to assume or imply that the new on camera talent aren't there because of their qualifications. The issues with BA needs to be addressed by the decision makers. Not the POC shown in this video.

  • It is not BA's responsability to shine light on ethnic cuisine. As you said, they are a big capitalistic coorporation and their sole purpose being such a coorporation is to make money. If people are not watching videos that are explaining ethnic cuisine, they have no reason to make such videos. We can't blame bon appetit for playing the game of capitalism. Them treating their employees like shit and underpaying them is a whole nother problem but people need to understand that in a capitalistic world, we as the customers decide what is put out in the world and what's not. If you complain about factory farming and the horrific conditions farm animals are living in but you eat meat all day, you can't expect shit to change. Same thing with condé nast. If you haven't watched the videos, there is no point in complaining about them not being made as often. This is a problem of the capitalistic system in general and not a problem of one single company.

I tried to leave some comments about how problematic his brushing off the problem was but they were never posted by AMworlds (maybe Bon Appetit was deleting them somehow?) I also tried leaving links to Sohla's interview just so BA fans can get a clearer picture of what's actually happening, but those were removed as well. BA is blatantly trying to get past this with as little accountability as possible and it's very frustrating that even the freaking comments section have to be tampered now too. Anyway I'm glad you posted this video and I'm glad people here are more open to discourse!!
